Daily Devotional (August-26-2022) LEADERSHIP WITH WISDOM

Scripture Reference: 2 Samuel 23:15-17 - “And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate! And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD. And he said, Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this: is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? Therefore he would not drink it…”

We are surrounded by many leaders who only take advantage of the devotions of their followers or Subordinates. Most leaders are only interested in what they will get from people and not necessarily what others will get from following them. David was blessed with mighty men who really loved him. They were so devoted to him that even when he expressed a wish to drink water from a particular well, they willingly risked their lives to get it for him. Without hesitation many followers willingly can do things because of their leaders.

He expressed a wish but they saw it as an instruction. This is a kind of devotion where the leader must draw the line and define the boundaries with wisdom.

David did not drink the water. He poured it as an offering to God. Unlike many today, the love and devotion from people is a way to get everything they want and to show control. When you love a person, everything you do for them does not have to be from a request or an instruction. Their wishes and desires should be enough.

With the example from David it shows that when people love you, you do not always have to convert your wishes to instructions. You would see them do things without you asking or insisting. There are certain things you shouldn’t take for granted. Give room to people to genuinely love you, without threats and fear. If they do not do things like this naturally for you, it may be because you do not show love. If you demonstrate love towards others, love from others will be directed towards you.

Do not take advantage of the love and devotion of others. David did not give an unreasonable instruction to the men to risk their lives to get him that water. Well, many people (members or followers) can blindly out of love do things just to please the leader. But let it be known publicly that service to you (leader) is service to God but with all wisdom and decency.

Prayer - Thank you Father for your Word in my spirit which is my wisdom and direction, I’m the light of the world directing many to you. The wisdom of God is at work in me in the Name of Jesus. Amen.
