Check out this friendly exchange between Frank and Dr. Bruce Russell, an atheist professor who denies that morals are dependent upon God's existence. Does his reasoning hold up?

What makes a concept "necessary"? The idea that some concepts are "necessary" seems to imply the proffering of a judgment about the necessity of the concept. Upon what foundation is the judgment of necessity based? How does unguided randomness produce "necessity"? Doesn't the idea of "necessity" border on being a "moral" determination? How is that determination rendered? The professor seems to be saying that, based on pragmatics and perhaps experience, we learn that certain moral behaviors are preferred over others, and because of that experience, we deem those behaviors "necessary" for the good of society and the flourishing of human life. Those "necessities" don't seem to arise from the study of nature itself, which is based on "blood, tooth, and claw" and the "survival of the fittest." I would love to know where the origin of conscience fits into this discussion. Did conscience give birth to the necessity of the concept, or did the concept give birth to the necessity? Is "necessity" an adequate ontologic explanation for the veracity of these "necessary" concepts? The finely-tuned universe is obviously a "necessity" for life but How and WHY randomness produced those laws is the mystery; it seems like we are gravitating toward tautology land.
