Jack Hibbs - Weekly Devotional: Dig Again

Genesis 26:18 - “And Isaac dug again the wells of water which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father….”

Here in this simple statement of fact is a model of personal revival for each of us. Notice that “…Isaac dug again the wells… which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father.”

WELLS AND ALTARS

From the moment God called the Old Testament patriarch Abraham out of the pagan land of Ur, Abraham became a worshipper. What I find interesting is that when we read about Abraham elsewhere, whenever he dug a well for water, an altar of thanks would soon spring up. Abraham’s godly lifestyle and its public display did not go unnoticed by Isaac, who adopted his father’s worship practice. (Genesis 26:25)

Isaac’s re-opening of wells was the unplugging of waters that the Philistines had stopped up in earlier days. Biblically, the Philistines are pictured as agents of sin, and sin will always stop up the flow of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer.

When life’s pressures and spiritual neglect stop the flow of God’s work in our lives, what are we to do? We must re-open our hearts by digging into the Bible afresh.

We must dig again.

REFRESHMENT AND PRAISE

I know that when we grow tired and dusty in spirit, it may seem impossible to be refreshed by new waters of revival. But that sense of despair is a deceptive mirage. It’s in the dryness of a spiritual desert that the Source of life-giving water is more needful and even more worthy of our praise. Dig again and feel the Spirit’s reviving waters flow over your soul.

Are you in a dry place today? Then re-open the well and worship – build an altar of thanksgiving there. Drink in the refreshment that can only come from the Lord.

IN HIS PRESENCE

Do you belong to Jesus Christ? Have you followed Him only to experience wave after wave of trouble? Are you being tossed by fear and doubt over how it will end? Then insert your name and circumstance into this account and its eventual outcome because the same LORD is with you today.

Rest in His power alone and trust Him to take you over to the other side.
