Jack Hibbs (January-24-2022) Weekly Devotional: Humility
“By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches and honor and life.” - Proverbs 22:4
Some paths are more difficult to walk than others, and the way of humility is one. Though our flesh cringes at the thought of anything humbling, it is always productive – God, in His great love, sees to it.
Cultivating humility requires us to challenge our motives by asking, “Lord, is this ministry, pursuit, or possession for Your glory or mine?” He delights in answering prayers like this and will uncover pride hiding in places you least expect.
In the classic book The Pilgrim’s Progress, a man named Christian begins his descent into the Valley of Humiliation, a place described as: a land with a very fruitful soil, in which many a pilgrim has traveled. Eyeing the path, he says, “As far as I can see, going down looks treacherous.” To which, he heard, “Yes, it is. It is a very difficult thing for a man to go down into the Valley of Humiliation and not slip on the way.”
Today, will you abandon yourself to God? He promises that you will find blessing upon blessing in embracing humility here and now.
