Rick Warren (March-14-2024) Daily Devotional: Pain Can Point You Toward Your Purpose - Daily Hope.

“God teaches people through suffering and uses distress to open their eyes.” - Job 36:15 (GNT)

Even when you’re not aware of it, God is directing your life. Proverbs 16:9 says, “A person may plan his own journey, but the LORD directs his steps” (GW).

God likes to direct you through his Word. When we read and study the Bible regularly, that’s often all he needs. But many of us don’t spend enough time reading God’s Word, so another way he’ll guide and direct us is through pain.

Job 36:15 says, “God teaches people through suffering and uses distress to open their eyes” (GNT).

Have you ever thought about why horse riders put a bit in a horse’s mouth? It’s not for the horse’s comfort. The rider uses discomfort to point the horse in a different direction.

In the same way, pain guides and directs you and often turns you in a new direction.

When King David realized that God was using the pain in his life to point him in the direction God wanted him to go, David was actually grateful for his pain: “My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees” (Psalm 119:71 NLT).

C. S. Lewis once said that God whispers to us in our pleasure but shouts to us in our pain. Pain is God’s megaphone. It never leaves you where it found you. No matter how bad the pain is or where it came from, God can use it to point you toward your purpose.

Paul said to the believers at Corinth who were experiencing some discomfort and pain, “Now I am glad . . . not because it hurt you, but because the pain caused you to repent and change your ways” (2 Corinthians 7:9 NLT).

You don’t have to be glad that you’re experiencing pain. But you can ask God to use your pain to guide you in the right direction and thank him for all the ways he will provide for you.

Talk It Over

  • What is the most significant way a painful experience has changed you for your good?
  • What do you need to remember about God when you are going through pain?
  • How can you encourage someone who is going through a painful experience today?

In video sermon Joyce Meyer talks about how we can do it. She says that you, God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit form a powerful group that can accomplish anything!

David Jeremiah (October-20-2023) Daily Devotional: Confidence.

But there is a God in heaven. Daniel 2:28

Recommended Reading: Daniel 2:16-23 - So Daniel went in and asked the king to give him time, that he might tell the king the interpretation. 17 Then Daniel went to his house, and made the decision known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions, 18 that they might seek mercies from the God of heaven concerning this secret, so that Daniel and his companions might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a night vision. So Daniel blessed the God of heaven. 20 Daniel answered and said: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,For wisdom and might are His.21 And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wiseAnd knowledge to those who have understanding.22 He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness,And light dwells with Him. 23 “I thank You and praise You,O God of my fathers; You have given me wisdom and might,And have now made known to me what we asked of You,For You have made known to us the king’s demand.”

Day by day, the world is unraveling, becoming more frayed and afraid, more unstable and unsteady. We hear of wars and rumors of war, of false christs, of famines, of earthquakes, and of pestilences. Nations are rising against nations and kingdoms against kingdoms. Christians are attacked and slain at an accelerated pace. But there is a God in heaven.

We needn’t pace the floor at night or run around in a frenzy. We shouldn’t faint, fear, or fret. There is a God in heaven.

Daniel, too, lived in a churning world of change, empires rising and falling. His own nation, Israel, was wiped off the earth like a stain. But Daniel’s spirit remained steady because he understood the sovereign providence of the God of heaven. “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,” he wrote, “for wisdom and might are His. And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings…. The Most High rules in the kingdom of men” (Daniel 2:20-21; 4:17).

In the Last Days perilous times will come, but there is a God in heaven—and if you know Christ as Savior, this God is your God. He rules and reigns, and our times are in His hands (Psalm 31:15).
